Toileting Issues and Dementia

November 1, 2023

Here are five things you can do with toileting issues with a loved one with dementia:

  1. Keep a regular schedule. People with dementia often have difficulty understanding when they need to go to the bathroom. It is important to keep a regular schedule for when they should go to the bathroom. This will help them to learn when they need to go and will help to reduce accidents.
  2. Make the bathroom easy to find. People with dementia often have difficulty finding the bathroom. Make sure that the bathroom is easy to find and that there are no obstacles in the way.
  3. Use a commode or bedside toilet. If your loved one is having trouble getting to the bathroom, you may need to use a commode or bedside toilet. This will make it easier for them to go to the bathroom without having to get up.
  4. Be patient and understanding. People with dementia often have difficulty controlling their bladder and bowels. It is important to be patient and understanding with them. If they have an accident, clean them up and reassure them that it is okay.
  5. Seek professional help. If you are struggling to manage your loved one’s toileting issues, you may need to seek professional help. There are many resources available to help you and your loved one.
