Four Common Dementia Mistakes

October 27, 2023

Here are four common mistakes that someone makes when they are caring for someone with dementia:

  1. Assuming the person with dementia can no longer do anything for themselves. People with dementia often have difficulty with certain tasks, but they are still able to do many things for themselves. It is important to let them do as much as they can for themselves, even if it takes them longer.
  2. Not providing enough support. Caring for someone with dementia can be a physically and emotionally demanding task. It is important to make sure that you are getting the support that you need. There are many resources available to help caregivers, such as support groups, respite care, and financial assistance.
  3. Not being patient. People with dementia often have difficulty with memory and thinking. It is important to be patient and understanding with them. Remember that they are going through a difficult time as well.
  4. Not making time for yourself. Caring for someone with dementia can be all-consuming. It is important to make sure that you are making time for yourself. Even if it is just for a few minutes each day, do something that you enjoy. This will help you to stay sane and to be a better caregiver.

If you are caring for someone with dementia, it is important to remember that you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you. Please reach out for help if you need it.
