The Power of Exercise and Dementia

July 11, 2023

Exercise is an important factor when it comes to supporting good health and wellbeing, particularly as we age. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) adults aged 18-64 should be engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week. This level of exercise has been linked to a range of benefits, including improved cognition and mental health, better sleep quality and reduced risk of chronic illnesses.

As well as the physical benefits, exercise can also be beneficial for our social lives. Being physically active in group settings can help to create meaningful relationships with others, which can contribute to an improved sense of belonging and increased self-esteem. It’s also a great way to socialise and meet new people.

For those looking to start exercising, it’s important to begin at a comfortable level of intensity that is achievable – it’s better to start small and gradually increase over time than to overexert yourself too quickly. Different forms of exercise can be explored depending on individual preferences, such as walking, running, dancing, swimming and more.

Overall, exercising regularly is a great way to support physical and mental health as we age. It can be an enjoyable social activity if done in groups, or a calming solo experience – the choice is yours!

Remember to always listen to your body and make sure you are comfortable with your activity levels. Stay safe and stay active!
