Not Getting Older… Getting Better!

There are lots of things we can do to help ourselves age well. Many of these activities are enjoyable, like sports and community events. But were you aware that your participation in such activities also promotes health and well-being?

As we age it is common that we spend more time alone. But, sadly, being isolated can promote depression. It’s bad for our health. Consider getting involved as a volunteer or participating in a social activity like a church group or civic club. Research establishes that seniors who maintain an active lifestyle:

Have a longer lifespan

One research study showed that elders who engage in social activities, like playing games, being in civic groups or traveling, live longer than people who do not.

Are more happy and less depressed

Research shows that senior adults who Participate in what day consider to be activities with purpose such as volunteering saying they feel beer and healthier. The opportunity to have a sense of purpose improve one’s cognitive and physical

Are less likely to develop certain diseases

Being active in hobbies and other leisure activities is shown to reduce risk for a variety of health problems, including Alzheimer’s and dementia

May be able to think more clearly

Another line of investigation studies how participation in the creative arts might help aging. Some studies show that memory, comprehension, creativity and problem solving improve after a month-long acting course.

Cope with loss more successfully

Researchers have I noted that volunteerism can help with depression and stress that results from the loss of a loved one.
