News Flash for Chapel Hill: Dementia is the Leading Cause of Death in England and Wales

January 6, 2017

Latest figures reveal that dementia has overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales. Many people are living longer and death from other causes such as heart disease has gone down. Doctors have also gotten better at diagnosing dementia and it is given more weight on death certificates. Women are seeing much higher dementia deaths-41,283, compared to men at 20,403. Females deaths from dementia are 15.2% in 2015 compared to 13.4% in 2014. Heart disease was the leading cause of death for men in 2015. This draws attention to the fact that no one survives a diagnosis of dementia. Finding a cure and treatment for dementia is one of the biggest challenges for today. It won’t be long until other countries follow along as dementia becomes a crisis among the elderly.
