Are There Three Types of Alzheimer’s Disease?
A recent study at UCLA has discovered that there are possibly three types of Alzheimer’s which suggests that each variation would need to be treated differently. The subtypes are inflammatory, non-inflammatory, and cortical. In Inflammatory, protein and serum albumin to globulin ratios markers are increased, non-inflammatory does not show an increase in the markers, but metabolic abnormalities are present and cortical affects younger individuals and appears more widely spread across the brain than the other types of Alzheimer’s. The implication of this is that there may be specific treatments for each group. There is currently no effective treatment for Alzheimer’s although current studies point to metabolic abnormalities, hormonal deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia.
