Alzheimer’s Considered “Urgent National Priority”

February 5, 2013

The federal government recently announced plans to invest $156 million to fight Alzheimer’s disease and its associated effects.   This disease is taking a devastating toll on millions of senior citizens, so the recognition and categorization as an “urgent national priority” is comforting.  Yet given the scope of the disease and its costs on patients and family members, it’s difficult to see $156 million as enough.   The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease and that by 2050 treatment costs will escalate to $1.1 trillion.
