Getting Mom to Get Help? Easier Said than Done

November 27, 2023

It can be difficult to convince a loved one with dementia that they need help. They may not be aware of their own limitations or may not want to admit that they need help. Here are a few tips on how to convince your mom with dementia that she needs help:

  • Start by talking to her about your concerns. Explain to her that you are worried about her and that you think she may need help. Be specific about what you are worried about, such as her ability to cook or clean for herself.
  • Be prepared for her to resist. She may not want to admit that she needs help or she may not believe that she needs help. Be patient and understanding with her.
  • Offer her choices. Let her know that you are there to help her and that you will support her in whatever way she needs. Offer her choices, such as hiring a home health aide or moving to an assisted living facility.
  • Get professional help. If you are struggling to convince your mom with dementia that she needs help, you may need to get professional help. A social worker or a geriatric care manager can help you to assess your mom’s needs and to develop a plan to provide her with the help she needs.

It is important to remember that you cannot force your mom with dementia to get help. If she is not ready to accept help, you may need to wait until she is ready. In the meantime, you can provide her with support and encouragement.
