Avoiding Falls

January 5, 2024

As we age, our bodies become more susceptible to falls. Falls are the leading cause of death for older adults, and they can also cause serious injuries. There are a number of things that you can do to help your parent avoid falls, including:

  1. Make sure their home is safe. Look for tripping hazards, such as loose rugs or cords, and remove them. Make sure that there are grab bars in the bathroom and near the toilet. Install a shower seat and a raised toilet seat.
  2. Encourage them to exercise. Exercise helps to improve balance and strength, which can help to prevent falls. Encourage your parent to do activities like walking, swimming, or yoga.
  3. Make sure they wear shoes that fit well. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can make it difficult to walk and can increase the risk of falls.
  4. Make sure they have good vision. If your parent has any vision problems, make sure they get glasses or contacts.
  5. Make sure they take their medications as prescribed. Some medications can make it difficult to walk or balance. If your parent is taking any medications, talk to their doctor about whether they can increase the risk of falls.
  6. Be aware of their health conditions. Some health conditions, such as arthritis or osteoporosis, can make it more difficult to walk and can increase the risk of falls. If your parent has any health conditions, talk to their doctor about how to prevent falls.
  7. Be there for them. Let your parent know that you are there for them and that you are willing to help them stay safe. Offer to help them with tasks around the house or to take them to the doctor.
  8. Educate yourself and others. Learn more about falls and how to prevent them. Talk to your parent’s doctor and other healthcare professionals about falls.

By taking these steps, you can help your parent avoid falls and stay safe.
