Understanding the Difference Between Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

April 20, 2023

When faced with the decision of where to place an aging family member, it can be difficult to figure out whether a nursing home or an assisted living facility is the best option. While both provide support for a senior’s health needs, there are important differences between the two that should be considered before making a decision. Let’s take a look at what sets each type of care apart.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes—also known as skilled nursing facilities—provide 24/7 medical care and assistance in activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting. Seniors who require more intensive healthcare may benefit from nursing home care, because they are typically staffed by registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), certified nursing assistants (CNAs), and physical therapists who can manage medications and administer treatments ordered by physicians. Nursing homes also offer help with everyday tasks such as meal preparation, housekeeping services, transportation to doctor appointments, and recreational activities.

Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities provide personalized support services to seniors who need help with daily life but don’t require around-the-clock medical care. This type of housing is typically less expensive than nursing home care because it is not medically oriented; instead, staff members assist residents with everyday tasks such as dressing, grooming, medication management, housekeeping services, laundry services, meal preparation and transportation. Assisted living facilities often have community spaces for activities like exercise classes or board games that promote socialization among residents. Additionally, many assisted living facilities offer short-term stays for people recovering from illnesses or hospitalizations who may need extra care during their recovery period before returning home.

Conclusion

When trying to decide between a nursing home and an assisted living facility for your family member’s special needs and lifestyle requirements it is important to consider the level of medical attention required alongside other factors like proximity to family members and cost of care. Ultimately you want your loved one to be in an environment where they feel safe while being cared for in the best way possible. Doing research on both types of housing will help you make an informed decision about which type of facility best meets your family member’s needs.
