Sprinkle Some Cinnamon on the Joe!

June 19, 2013

We have commented in the past on how Alzheimer’s may be prevented, or at least its onset slowed, with regular consumption of coffee.  Recent research presented in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease suggests that cinnamon may also have preventive properties.

The hallmark of AD is the development of protein tangles in brain cells.  A compound in cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, which is responsible for the spice’s sweet smell and bright color, was shown in the study to be effective in preventing such tangles.   The researchers caution that it is too early to know for sure just how effective cinnamon is and what quantities are needed the human diet.

Until then, you’ll find me at the coffee shop, sprinkling a bit of cinnamon on my cup a joe.
