Keep Your Brain Well Oiled

March 22, 2013

I have blogged time and again about diet and Alzheimer’s disease.   Both are of interest to me personally and professionally.  The recent book, The Alzheimer’s Diet, showed that what we know as the Mediterranean Diet seems to support healthy brain functions and a decreased incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.   Recent research funded by the National Institutes of Health has drawn a closer relationship between these two by identifying how extra virgin olive oil can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers said a key component of olive oil helps remove abnormal proteins tied to Alzheimer’s from the brain.  Notably, the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease is much lower in Mediterranean countries.  Great  news for all of us who pay attention to nutrition and enjoy olive oil in their meals.
