The Caring Corner®
Person-Focused Care Beats Drugs
There is a lot of interesting dementia work coming out of Australia.
One of their latest focuses is understanding the dementia patient, whether in an institution or in a home care environment, in order to avoid the use of psychotropic drugs.
Caregivers are encouraged to look at each incident and analyze why the aggression or agitation may have taken place, on an individual basis. This helps caregivers plan for ways to avoid such behaviors in the future.
Caregivers are finding they can manage the senior better and that less drug intervention is needed.
