Old World Cures in Orange County: Acupuncture Found to Slow Alzheimer’s and Dementia Symptoms

September 7, 2016

A new study out of China has found that acupuncture can be useful to slow the side effects of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. The study found that the therapy was useful in patients experiencing mild cognitive impairment or MCI. MCI occurs in the intermediate stage between natural cognitive decline and actual cognitive degenerative disease. Some individuals with MCI do not get worse, but very few actually get better. More than 5-10% of older adults with MCI will end up with some sort of severe dementia such as Alzheimer’s.

In the study, there were three groups in the trial. The first patients were given acupuncture only. The second patients were given the drug nimodipine only. The third patients were given acupuncture and the drug, nimodipine. Those receiving acupuncture only had better outcomes than the other two groups. However, the group using the acupuncture and the drug had a better outcome than the group taking only the drug. The study found that acupuncture is an effective treatment to nimodipine for amnestic mild cognitive impairment. This in one of the first studies to compare the benefits of acupuncture therapy for dementia patients.
