New dementia research out of Germany further substantiates older studies suggesting that coffee can be beneficial in the prevention of Alzheimer’s.

The research, conducted in mice, shows that coffee has the ability to lower the development of tau protein deposits associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Tau proteins are one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s.  Their presence in the brain disrupts the communication processes between cells, leading to the confusion and dementia symptoms we associate with the disease.   Sadly, there are no cures for Alzheimer’s disease, and prevention is always better than a cure.  The news that coffee continues to show positive results in the elimination of dementia symptoms is positive.

In the Alzheimer’s study, treated mice displayed fewer symptoms of the disease, and performed much better in spatial memory tests.
