The Caring Corner – Costs of Dementia Skyrocketing

April 8, 2013

Dementia has the unique distinction of being the most expensive disease for our society.  Recent estimates peg the annual direct cost above $100 billion, and the total cost (taking into account things like lost wages of family members who care for a loved one) as high as $250 billion.  It’s ironic that the growing impact of dementia on families and our economy is a result of our success in curing other diseases.  With things like cancer and heart disease being much more controllable, we live longer, making ourselves susceptible to the ravages of aging.  See a great summary in this editorial.
