Caring for Alzheimer’s Patient Like Caring for Children

March 3, 2013

In many ways, caring for the Alzheimer’s patient is like caring for a young child.  Unfortunately, while children gradually learn to care for themselves, every day may bring new challenges and issues related to the senior’s memory loss and confusion.

A friend and colleague, Mary Nielsen of LovingCare@Home, Inc. in Sun City West, Arizona, (www.lovingcareathome.com) wrote an excellent article on some of the thing you need to keep in mind as you care for your loved one.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Make sure that the locks on the home doors are secure and that your loved one can’t accidentally fall out of a window.
  2. Remove locking doorknobs from rooms inside the home so that your loved one can’t accidentally lock himself in.
  3. Remove obstacles that could create a trip and fall danger.
  4. Keep medications, knives and other dangerous items where your loved one can’t access them.
