Alzheimer’s Expected to Triple by 2050

March 9, 2013

A recent article in Pharmacy Times cites demographic statistics indicating that the size of the Alzheimer’s population will triple by the year 2050.  This is consistent with other reports we have seen.  All drugs that exist today only reduce the effects of the disease.  They do nothing to eliminate it.

The single greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is age, suggesting that our best plan for avoiding the disease is to simply not get old.  Not a good plan!!  A number of studies suggest that diet can play an important role in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s onset.  Of those, diets that include periods of fasting as a way to allow cells to “clean themselves out” seem to have promise.  Alzheimer’s is directly related to the development of amyloid plaques in the brain cells which are proteins that severely reduce the ability of the brain cells to communicate effectively.  The fasting period helps the cells consume the proteins that build up over time.
