Aging Women That Lose Weight May Be At Risk For Alzheimer’s

November 30, 2015

A recent study of women in Sweden has discovered that a gene variant associated with Alzheimer’s disease may cause a steeper decline in body mass index after age 70 than those without the gene. The findings are relevant because body weight change may help in the diagnosis, treatment and management of Alzheimer’s. The study tracked women over 40 years and their BMI in relation to dementia onset. Those with the gene experienced a steeper decline in body weight after age 70 whether they developed dementia or not. Body weight and BMI are easily measured and non-invasive and are potential indicators for dementia management. This study aids in understanding how we can better intervene among those with the highest risk of dementia.
