A New Twist on Eldercare

Deafness, osteoporosis, dementia, Alzheimer’s, fall risks, washable floors for the incontinent, ramps for the disabled. It sounds like a description of a nursing home or Assisted Living environment. It is actually the newest version of prison.

According to a recent Economist article, the prison population around the world is aging. The growth rates appear to be higher than those of the larger population. Eldercare is a growing concern for most societies. It is creating new challenges for stressed governments and corrections departments.  It raises new moral questions about how we care for and what service we provide to prison inmates.
